Energy tip #10: remove wall warts and slay electricity vampires

Are you plugged in? If you have ever left rechargers or unused appliances
plugged into the electrical outlet, you may be in for a bit of a shock. The
U.S. Department of Energy tells us that not only do appliances continue to
draw electricity while the products are turned off, but in the average home
nearly 75% of all electricty used to power electronics is consumed by
products that are switched off.

VCRs, televisions, stereos, computers, and kitchen appliances all use energy
while not in use. You may have noticed how a cell phone recharger can be
warm even when not attached to a phone. The best way to prevent unnecessary
energy expenditures is to do a clean sweep of your home. Here at the office,
we’ve gotten into the routine of unplugging our water cooler at night. The
process is a bit of a hassle at first, but hassle quickly turns into
painless habit.

(Bonus question for engineers: can anyone explain why products can’t be
designed to prevent this sort of passive energy use? Is it simply laziness
on the part of the manufacturers, or is there a real design constraint at
work?)

The good folks over at Ideal Bite have previously tackled this issue and
suggest the following:

Use power strips to turn off TVs and stereos. You’ll save the energy
equivalent of a 100-watt light bulb that is always on.
Unplug chargers (think cell phones and iPods) when not in use. Only 5% of
the power drawn by a cell phone charger is used to charge the phone. The
other 95% is wasted when it is left plugged into the wall.

This article has helped me gain some insights of a successful creative/ agency; I thought I’d want to share it with everyone else. Hope this will shed some light in you as well.

Let’s continue to learn from our mistakes and from people around you :)

You and your buddy are just starting out.

You're a couple of juniors from ad school, or wherever. You both have killer books; maybe you've scored in the One Show college competition. You're excited and juiced. You have tons of potential.

Flash forward fifteen years.

One of you has become the creative director of a brilliant agency. The other is brain dead in Punxsutawney.

A fascinating scenario, and one I've tried to make sense of in the twenty years I've been at this. If you're a kid, this is written to try to help you avoid the mistakes some of your talented but misguided predecessors have made.

Here, then, are nine attempts at understanding why some people fall off the face of the earth:

First, it seems that these people somehow get it in their heads they're artistes and poets. A wrongheaded and dopey notion. We're businesspeople who use creativity as a vehicle to deliver brand messages. This is different from being someone who uses advertising as a vehicle to deliver pretentious crap.

Second, some people speak about their clients with condescension and loathing. Again, dumb. Not to mention counterproductive. Think about what it's like to be a client for a second. You worry that you're paying the agency big money to help, knowing it's your ass if they don't. You worry about whether they'll create work everyone inside and outside your company can feel good about. You worry about whether they'll penetrate the issues as solvers of business problems or just ad makers. But then when the agency people come through for you, you become less worried.

You begin to see them as a secret weapon. As time goes on, you allow them to guide you into new territory because you trust them. The point being, it's hard work to earn and maintain client trust, but it's been the foundation of every great campaign ever created.

Third, some people don't seem to recover well when their first or second batch of work is killed. After a couple of rounds, they decide the assignment isn't good anymore and return with garbage. Bob Moore, our Fallon/Minneapolis creative director, points out, "This is a sure way of becoming a hack. Five years down the road you've got no book and you're bitching about how lousy your agency is.

Who made it lousy? You did." This is an important point. You should know that most creative directors don't assess you simply by how creative you are. We also consider how deep, how fast, and how willing to return to the well you are. And how much of a pain in the ass you aren't.

A freelancer and early mentor of mine, Ernie Schenck, was telling me about someone he'd worked with who wasn't able to rebound: "This went on for a few years, so nobody was surprised when he turned into this pathetic, defeated little puddle of awesome talent that never amounted to jack."

Sad.

Fallon account manager Rob Buchner says, "Stamina is a constant virtue I see in the best creative people; emotional and intellectual stamina. Without perseverance, their talent surrenders to the uglier dynamics of the business."

Fourth, while still developing their talent, some people decide to follow the scent of money instead of continuing to follow the trail of great work. One of my partners at Fallon, Mark Goldstein, says truly great creative people are able to recognize "quicksand" agencies. These are places where no matter how good you are, the internal processes and culture conspire to make you horrible. The lure is the short-term financial gain. Goldstein says, "That's because bad agencies are happy to overpay for badness; they don't know the difference." But you'll know the difference.

Fifth, some people become intoxicated with the idea of titles, puff pieces in the trades, and becoming "a manager." Fallon legend, Bob Barrie, warns, "The first time you do a decent campaign you'll get calls from bad agencies. You'll decide to 'move up' and join one of them and then you'll disappear. Never make a decision based on coin. Do brilliant work and you'll be rewarded more in the end anyway." As far as managing goes, Bob says, "You can't manage till you've done tons of great work yourself. How can you be a credible judge of other people's stuff when you're still figuring out how to do it yourself?"

This segues nicely into my sixth point. Some people appear to be unconcerned with building a body of brilliant work over time. A question: who's had the richer career, Neil Young or Donovan? Young has been making brilliant records for 35 years. Donovan had some hits in the mid-1960s. Many of you may be wondering, who's Donovan? Exactly. The point is, you can't put together a few good campaigns and hope to live off the fumes forever. You're only as good as the last thing you did, and you should've done that today. Current greats like [Lee] Clow and [Phil] Dusenberry are Neil Youngs.

Seventh, some people seem closed to new ways of doing things. Another Fallon partner, Rich Stoddart, says, "The successful creative is totally objective about his or her own work. If it's not working, if it isn't right, they just move on. Bad creatives only think 'protect, protect, protect.'"

Here's what is important: humility. It's great to be around people like Pat Fallon, Laurel Cutler and Maurice Levy, who demonstrate every day that the greater the success, the greater the opportunity to remain humble. And if just
being classy isn't reason enough to be humble, then consider the practical side. The guy who gave me my start, Jon Goward, says, "Once you start thinking too highly of yourself, your ears fall off. You stop listening to anyone who criticizes anything you do because you think you know better. And that feeds itself. Success tends to attract people who tell you how great you are. The tricky part is maintaining a strong sense of yourself; being sensitive enough to hear what clients and other people who disagree with you say."

If you're really great, let other people talk about you. Your job is fairly simple: be quiet, sit down and create some more work. (In fact, why are you reading this when you could be working on your craft right now? Put this down. You'll learn more by doing than reading about doing.)

I heard a guy say something a few years ago that sums up the whole thing for me. He said, "My best people come to work every day worrying that they're about to be fired, while the mediocre people are always shocked when they actually are fired."

Not long ago I came to one of those bleak periods that many of us encounter from time to time, a sudden drastic dip in the graph of living when everything goes stale and flat, energy wanes, and enthusiasm dies. The effect on my work was frightening. Every morning I would clench my teeth and mutter: “Today life will take on some of its old meaning. You’ve got to break through this thing. You’ve got to!”

But the barren days went by, and the paralysis grew worse. The time came when I knew I had to have help. The man I turned to was a doctor. Not a psychiatrist, just a doctor. He was older than I, and under his surface gruffness lay great wisdom and compassion. “I don’t know what’s wrong,” I told him miserably, “but I just seem to have come to a dead end. Can you help me?” “I don’t know,” he said slowly. He made a tent of his fingers and gazed at me thoughtfully for a long while. Then, abruptly, he asked, “Where were you happiest as a child?” “As a child?” I echoed. “Why, at the beach, I suppose. We had a summer cottage there. We all loved it.” He looked out the window and watched the October leaves sifting down. “Are you capable of following instructions for a single day?” “I think so,” I said, ready to try anything. “All right. Here’s what I want you to do.” He told me to drive to the beach alone the following morning, arriving not later than nine o’clock. For a moment, when you truly listen for something outside yourself, you have to silence the clamorous voices within. The mind rests. I went back to the car and slid behind the wheel. We braced ourselves for disappointment. Then we heard him say, “No, I won’t be down. It’ll have to wait.” When he came back to the table, Mother smiled. “The circus keeps coming back, you know.” “I know,” said Father. “But childhood doesn’t.” Across all the years I remembered this and knew from the sudden glow of warmth that no kindness is ever wasted or ever completely lost. This is a rather lengthystory but if the concept is applied to the petroleum industry en masse,it just may work.

A man eats two eggs each morning for breakfast. When he goes to the grocery store he pays 60 cents a dozen. Since a dozeneggs won't last a week he normally buys two dozens at a time.
One day while buying eggs he notices that the price has risen to 72 cents. The next time he buys groceries, eggs are 76 cents a dozen.

When asked to explain the price of eggs the store owner says, "Theprice has gone up and I have to raise my price accordingly".
This store buys 100 dozen eggs a day. He checked around for a betterprice and all the distributors have raised their prices.
The distributors have begun to buy from the huge egg farms. The smallegg farms have been driven out of business. The huge egg farms sell100,000 dozen eggs a day to distributors. With no competition, theycan set the price as they see fit. The distributors then have to raisetheir prices to the grocery stores. And on and on and on.

As the man kept buying eggs the price kept going up. He saw the big eggtrucks delivering 100 dozen eggs each day. Nothing changed there. He checked out the huge egg farms and found they were selling 100,000 dozeneggs to the distributors daily. Nothing had changed but the price of eggs.

Then week before Thanksgiving the price of eggs shot up to $1.00 a dozen.Again he asked the grocery owner why and was told, "Cakes andbaking for the holiday". The huge egg farmers know there willbe a lot of baking going on and more eggs will be used. Hence, the priceof eggs goes up. Expect the same thing at Christmas and other timeswhen family cooking, baking, etc. happen.

This pattern continues until the price of eggs is 2.00 a dozen. The man says, " There must be something we can do about the price ofeggs".

He starts talking to all the people in his town and they decide to stopbuying eggs. This didn't work because everyone needed eggs.

Finally, the man suggested only buying what you need. He ate 2 eggsa day. On the way home from work he would stop at the grocery andbuy two eggs. Everyone in town started buying 2 or 3 eggs a day.

The grocery store owner began complaining that he had too many eggs inhis cooler. He told the distributor that he didn't need any eggs. Maybe wouldn't need any all week.

The distributor had eggs piling up at his warehouse. He told thehuge egg farms that he didn't have any room for eggs would
not need any for at least two weeks.

At the egg farm, the chickens just kept on laying eggs. To relievethe pressure, the huge egg farm told the distributor that they could buythe eggs at a lower price.

The distributor said, " I don't have the room for the %$&^*&%eggs even if they were free". The distributor told the grocerystore owner that he would lower the price of the eggs if the store wouldstart buying again.

The grocery store owner said, "I don't have room for more eggs. Thecustomers are only buying 2 or 3 eggs at a time. Now if youwere to drop the price of eggs back down to the original price, thecustomers would start buying by thedozen again".

The distributors sent that proposal to the huge egg farmers but the eggfarmers liked the price they were getting for their eggs but, those chickensjust kept on laying. Finally, the egg farmers lowered the price oftheir eggs. But only a few cents.

The customers still bought 2 or 3 eggs at a time. They said, "whenthe price of eggs gets down to where it was before, we will startbuying by the dozen."

Slowly the price of eggs started dropping. The distributors had toslash their prices to make room for the eggs coming from the egg farmers.

The egg farmers cut their prices because the distributors wouldn't buyat a higher price than they were selling eggs for. Anyway, theyhad full warehouses and wouldn't need eggs for quite a while.

And those chickens kept on laying.

Eventually, the egg farmers cut their prices because they were throwingaway eggs they couldn't sell.

The distributors started buying again because the eggs were priced to wherethe stores could afford to sell them at the lower price.

And the customers starting buying by the dozen again.

Now, transpose this analogy to the gasoline industry.

What if everyone only bought $10.00 worth of gas each time they pulledto the pump? The dealer's tanks would stay semi full all the time. The dealers wouldn't have room for the gas coming from the huge tankfarms. The tank farms wouldn't have room for the gas comingfrom the refining plants. And the refining plants wouldn't have roomfor the oil being off loaded from the huge tankers coming from theoil fiends.

Just $10.00 each time you buy gas. Don't fill it up. You may haveto stop for gas twice a week but, the price should come
down.

Think about it.

As an added note...When I buy $10.00 worth of gas that leaves my tank a little under quarter full. The way prices are jumping around, youcan buy gas for $2.65 a gallon and then the next morning it can be $2.15. If you have your tank full of $2.65 gas you don't have room for the$2.15 gas. You might not understand the economics ofonly buying two eggs at a time but, you can't buy cheaper gas if your tankis full of the high priced stuff.

Also, don't buy anything else at the gas station; don't give them any moreof your hard earned money than what you spend on gas, until the pricescome down..."

Maple Story: Part 3 - Conclusion

After the official lunch, more and more people sign up for an account with asiasoft.
Till a point where logging in to the server is a hassle people spent hrs in front of their PC just to login to the game and others leave their PC on 24 hrs so that they do not have to re login.

Then after quite some time, A$ finally decided to release a 2nd server. But little people migrate there as they had already spent too much time one the 1st server.
For a period after that, there was peace.

But something bad happen when the 3rd server came out. There are too many hackers as compare to the GMs, that people can hack happily and the GM never came and catch them. This goes on for many weeks. Finally A$ implement to stop the hacker, it stop the hackers alrite, at the same time stop players with sucky computers unable to play the game.

Guess the problems will never ends, but I have to put a end to this Hacker Story chapter else I will never be able to review on other games.

Maple Story: Part 2

Back by "popular" demand, I present you with the 2nd part of my review...

As days pass by, more and more people signed up for MapleSEA. When the first beta was open, about 1000 users were allowed to sign up. And there was about 4-6 channels at that time. Every thing was peaceful beside a few hackers every now and then, even after the 2nd beta was open.

Then finally, A$ decided that they are ready to release the game to the general public one day. A$ ask for "donation" from users to put up an advertisement on the Newpaper to invite kids and teens to the official launch of MapleSEA at Orchard. Many people turn up. And pre paid card was sold for the first time.

When the cash item first came out, some players tried to scam password from other user saying they are the GM.

The game play:
Maple Story is a 2-D game. It has the same music for all of the maps in an area.
In this game, you will control a cute character which the head is about half the body size. You can let your character wear many kind of clothes and equipment which you can buy from NPC, Cash Shop or pick up from drop from monster.
Messo - The money in the game. You will need them to buy equipment from NPC. Monster drop messo.
Quest - Follow instruction from NPC and collect stuff.

The Review:
The character design is good, each kind of jobs have different skill. The game play is very unique from any other game you have ever played. It is one of the slowest game to level up. It can hook players on to their computers for many hours every day, and its bad for the health and school result.
And people even buy messo/items for real money. Although many players know that its bad for them but they can't stop playing!

I give it a 4/5 stars for making people addicted to it!

There are few server that time. South East Asia have a few server that time too. Back then there were many hackers were everywhere, hacking happily away.
- Some of the hacks include

Vacuum hack: All the monster are suck to the same spot on the map, player can hit the monsters without moving around
Botting: AcTool was use to program "steps" for the character to move on their own while the player take a nap.
God Hack: Won't get hit by monster.
Speed Hack: Move at the speed of sound.
Fly Hack: Fly like the birds.
Scroll Hack: Get godly weapons/equip.
Etc.

- You name it, anything you can think of they have it. It was a very popular game, that's why so many hack. 20% of the population was hackers.
- The day finally came, Asiasoft bought the license for hosting the game in SEA. I call it the D-day for maplers in SEA. End of the world!
- Few days before the handover, there was chaos everywhere. Players knowing their account will be delete soon and was so sad, they curse and swear at Asiasoft for taking over, now they have to play again. But nothing can be done. The shut down button was press on the server, stopping game access for all the users in SEA and there is noting we can do but to curse and swear at Asiasoft again.
- Some believe that Asiasoft will bring better game experience for users in SEA. Now we will see...
